In the early 1900s, the term “blue moon” was used to refer to a phenomenon when four full moons occurred within a season instead of three. On rare occasions, the moon can appear blue to the human eye if the particulate matter of the right size is suspended in the atmosphere and interacts with light reflecting off the moon.
